Idaho Window Tinting Laws: Changes and Updates for 2023

Driving regulations keep us safe, but the rules of the road extend beyond driving the speed limit and wearing your seatbelt. Idaho’s window tinting laws help drivers maintain a clear view of the road to better see other vehicles, pedestrians, and potential hazards.

If you plan to tint your windows, you should understand Idaho’s laws. Here’s everything you need to know about Idaho window tinting laws and any recent changes.

What You Need to Know About Idaho Window Tinting Laws: Overview and Enforcement

The percentage of visible light that can penetrate your vehicle’s windows is known as visible light transmission, or VLT. The lower the VLT percentage, the darker the tint will be. For instance, window film with a 60% VLT allows 60% of sunlight to pass through your car’s windows.

Window Tint Rules for Sedans, SUVs, and Vans

In Idaho, window tinting laws require the same VLT percentage for sedans, SUVs, and vans.

These rules are:

  • Windshield: Non-reflective tint is allowed above the manufacturer’s AS-1 line, or the top six inches of your windshield.
  • Front side windows: Must have a VLT of 35% or more
  • Back side windows: Must have a VLT of 20% or more
  • Rear window: Must have a VLT of 35% or more (If you tint your rear window, you must have dual-side mirrors.)

Colored-Tint

Idaho drivers can use any colored tint they want, as long as the film adheres to the VLT laws. However, highly reflective tints are illegal, regardless of their VLT percentage.

Window Tint Identifications

You do NOT need to have stickers identifying that the tint is legal. You also do NOT need to have manufacturer certificates for your film.

2023 Idaho Window Tinting Law Changes

While Idaho originally enacted its window tinting laws in 1992, the rules have been modified several times. This is typically in response to new technologies or products hitting the market.

Fortunately, there have not been any changes to Idaho tinting laws this year.

An Overview of Window Tinting: Types and Benefits

We understand that some motorists might not know what window tints are, making it challenging to understand the reasoning behind Idaho’s laws.

What is Window Tinting?

Window tinting is the process of applying a thin layer of film to the interior surface of your car’s windows to darken them and block sunlight from shining through.

Tinting your windows enhances the look of your ride, reduces sun glare, and blocks UV rays by up to 99%. This lowers your risk of skin cancer, prevents your vehicle’s interior from fading, and keeps your cabin cool.
